All-Woodland Day, a Celebration of WSC's Oldest Teams!

On Sunday November 6th, Woodland Soccer Club's two oldest girls teams and two oldest boys teams faced off in back-to-back games in a celebration of WSC’s oldest teams! On girls side, the Famous Soccer Players played the Swarmettes at Lower Woodland, followed by the Cougars going up against the Riptide on boys side.

This rivalry day was put together to celebrate these teams, coaches and players - many of whom have been playing for Woodland since they were 5 and are now in their last couple of years of high school or graduating this year. Woodland hopes to make this an annual event as it was very well-received and supported by the teams. Parents and friends came with cowbells, juice boxes for the teens and "Football is Life" t-shirts, which every player received as a reminder of the wonderful role that soccer can play in our lives, both as kids and adults.

"Recreational soccer keeps so many of us together and has united so many people over the years. At our all-Woodland Day, we saw some exceptional play, great sportsmanship, and a wonderful community come together to support these young women and men, many of whom have played for Woodland since they were in U6. A lot of these players are going to go off to new adventures and new places before our next fall season, and while they have some games left, and a city tournament to conquer, it was a great opportunity to show them how proud we are to have had them wear the orange while growing up in our neighborhoods."

Playing together at Woodland Soccer Club since Kindergarten!

Recreational soccer has the unique ability to provide an experience unlike any other. It allows players to be active and spend time with their friends in an environment that is just the right mix of competitive without the pressure that can come with select and high school sports. It is fully focused on the joy of the game, teamwork and character building. And it works because these players have been coming back every fall for over TEN YEARS!

I have played on the Woodland Soccer Club Cougars since I was in kindergarten. My dad coaches the team. Many of my teammates and I have gone to school together and played for the club since the beginning. I also play on a select team and a school team, but I love my rec team the most. It’s been fun to play with my friends and to really get to enjoy the game and not feel the stress that can come along with select & school soccer. My grandparents and aunt and uncle often come to the games and the families on the team have become really close. I’m definitely going to miss my rec soccer playing days and being coached by my Dad.”

- Connor Furuglyas, player

Rec soccer has been an amazing experience for our family. My husband coaches our son’s team and I have been the team manager since the team was formed when our son was in kindergarten. He is now a senior. We’ve also enjoyed sitting on the Board of Directors of the Woodland Soccer Club for the last several years. I have been the treasurer, and my husband has been the SYSA board liaison. It’s been rewarding to not only enjoy watching our son play and grow up with his soccer friends, but also giving back to the club and the sport. We have formed lifelong friendships with many other families on our team and look forward to staying connected in the years to come. Rec soccer has given us a tremendous sense of community for which we are very grateful.

When you grow up playing soccer every fall with the same group of kids, you can't help but bond and create a special community. And when you have supportive, caring coaches that prioritize having fun and growing together, it's even more impactful and meaningful.

Swarmettes coach Rebecca Wynkoop says that "We’ve always had 3 rules for Swarmettes soccer: play hard, run fast and have fun!  I think we’re still doing that." Over ten years later (the team formed in 2011), talking to the players and those involved, it's easy to see that they ARE still doing that, still finding joy in the game and in the people that they share it with. Here are some words from some of the Swarmettes players and parents, about what this team and this community has meant to them over the years:

"I have been on the Swarmettes since kindergarten. We made a pact that we would stay a team through senior year of high school. We only have one year left after our 2022 season! I have made so many friendships and good memories playing on the Swarmettes. I am so grateful for our coaches, Rebecca and Justin, who have committed so much time and energy to our team. Without them, our team would not have made it to where we are! This team has kept me active and playing a sport every year. Playing soccer with this team has always been a highlight and something I can look forward to. I am going to miss playing with the Swarmettes so much and am savoring the last year we have together!"

- Grace Walker, player

"Playing on a rec team has been a really fun experience for me.  I appreciate the relaxed environment that also contains a layer of competitive energy.  I have grown up playing soccer with the Swarmettes and I feel like the Swarmettes are part of my family.  Coach Rebecca and Coach Justin are amazing coaches, and I'm so lucky to be on their team".

- Anna Ammann, player

{Photos: Swarmettes through the years}

"I have been on the Swarmettes rec soccer team for around 11 years now. Being a part of a team that has grown up together and continues to play soccer together means a lot to me and I'm so glad that I've gotten to be a part of it. Even though I don't go to the same high school as a lot of my teammates, it is fun to connect with people from other schools and have soccer to bring us together."

- Sydney Marion, player

"SYSA has provided a fun, safe and competitive environment for my kids for many years.  I appreciate the many parents that volunteer to make such a great association come together.  Swarmettes is a SYSA team that my daughter has been a part of since elementary school.  Coach Rebecca and Coach Justin have guided this team through many victories, some defeats, through many happy high fives and some tearful hugs. Not only have they coached this team on how to play soccer, they also coached this team to play with spirit, dignity and respect...on and off the field. I'm so grateful to have such wonderful role models for our kids!"

Sportsmanship at it's BEST

Sportsmanship isn't just about being nice to each other.  It includes upholding and honoring the GAME by being inclusive, kind and respectful to each and every person involved. It's about being the best person you can be in each and every moment. Even in the hard moments when you disagree with another's decision. Respect in sport is a necessity because without coming together (referees, coaches, parents, players) soccer as we know it wouldn't exist. You wouldn't be able to have a soccer game if there were no opponents, no referees, no teammates - so for this we are thankful for each and every person out there on game day.

Here's a fantastic example that we would like to shine a light on. Check out this photo from last Sunday's U18/U19 match between the Magnolia Kingsmen and the Ballard Honey Badgers. Players, referees and coaches formed a huddle at half time to show appreciation for each other.  This is a wonderful example of sportsmanship and respect, and illustrates everything we stand for here at SYSA.  We are so grateful to be a part of a soccer community where THIS is how we show up for each other and treat each other.

U18/19 (Mag) Kingsmen vs (Bal) Honey Badgers on Oct 23, 2022.

To all of the SYSA coaches, players and parents doing a fantastic job of embodying our SYSA core values of embracing community, being inclusive, fostering enjoyment of the sport, promoting a healthy lifestyle and practicing (and teaching!) good sportsmanship - we thank you and appreciate you!

-SYSA Executive Director & Staff

Please Treat our Seattle Soccer Fields with Care!

As stewards of the game in our wonderful city of Seattle, we are putting out a call to ask all SYSA members to help us keep our fields useable, safe and clean for everyone - and also reminding their neighbors, friends and family to do the same.

Soccer goal care:

Soccer goal safety is everyone's responsibility. Please treat the goals you see around the city with care. They are expensive and time consuming to repair. When they are climbed on, the nets get ripped and the structure becomes less stable and thereby unsafe. Soccer goals should ALWAYS be weighted and anchored, both when in use and especially when not in use. If you see that goals are NOT weighted please do not use them and definitely do NOT hang or climb on them.

THANK YOU to very own Ken Sloan, taking dismantled goals and turning them into safe and useable structures so that the community of Seattle can use them as they are intended to be used, to PLAY SOCCER!

Dogs at soccer fields:

Seattle is a very dog friendly city and many of us are dog owners ourselves - but our furry friends don't belong at soccer fields, during games or anytime. Both Seattle and Shoreline municipal codes prohibit dogs on playfields as they can damage the field, foul the surface and cause nuisance and distraction to participants.

Also - soccer fields are NOT off leash parks. Several playfields in the city (B.F. Day and Smith Cove specifically) have seen an uptake in the number of residents using them as off leash areas for their dogs. This results in messy fields, both in regards to the dog poop and to the holes that they dig up. The holes make the playing surfaces unsafe and difficult to use for practices and games.

Keeping fields clean:

Please take your garbage with you or place it in a garbage can located at the field. And if you see trash left by others, kindly dispose of it yourself.

Field safety and cleanliness is everyone's responsibility. Thank you for doing your part! For more on SYSA's field rules and safety policies, as well as information on field utilization, visit us here.

Call for volunteers!

If you would like to volunteer to help SYSA keep the fields in working order, please reach out to David Griffiths at davidg@sysa.org. High schoolers, a reminder that you can get service hour credits by volunteering with SYSA!

Details on the Self Esteem Workshop - Foundations For Building Unconditional Self-Worth:

Low self-esteem is a thinking pattern in which an individual views themself as inadequate, unworthy, and/or incompetent. Once formed, this negative view permeates every thought, producing faulty assumptions and ongoing self-defeating behavior.

Unfortunately, low self-esteem affects many of our teenagers to different degrees. It is one of the key factors that lead to low confidence and poor mental health. And can affect pretty much every area of their lives.

What can parents and their student athletes expect to gain from this workshop?

  1. A greater understanding into the structure of low self-esteem and its causes.

  2. How you can stop negatively comparing yourself to others.

  3. Why having healthy self-esteem is important if you want to develop true confidence.

  4. The most common communication errors parents make that contribute to self-esteem issues in teens + how to correct these errors.

  5. The key foundational pillars needed for a student to build unconditional self-esteem.

Workshop FAQs:

  • I can't attend live. Will you send a replay? If you can't attend live Jen still recommends that you register for the workshop because a replay will be emailed to you after the live event. You will have 7 days to watch the replay before it expires. (If extenuating circumstances come up and you and your child are unable to watch the replay before it expires, please email Jen at support@herpoweracademy.com and she will make sure you get access to it.)

  • Who is invited to the workshop? Both parents and their student athlete(s) of all genders. When parents attend with their children Jen and Luke have found that this helps with the child's transformation, learning and implementation of the tools they teach. The recommended age range is 12 years old and up. With that said, Jen and Luke have had younger athletes do their programs and they've received a lot of value from them. Ultimately it depends on the maturity of each student athlete.

  • How long is each workshop? 75 minutes followed by a 15 minute Q&A.

  • Not seeing your question answered? Please email Jen at support@herpoweracademy.com.

DP Night 2022: UW Men's Soccer vs Stanford on 10/6

Washington Men’s Soccer hosts Stanford on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium for the second-annual DP Night. With October being Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Month, the Washington men's soccer team has partnered with the DP Foundation to raise awareness for sudden cardiac awareness.

In December of 2015, Washington soccer alum Daniel Phelps passed away at the age of 27 after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest in his sleep. Daniel played forward and wore #19 at UW. He was a natural leader and motivator. His work ethic, charisma, humor and general outlook on life made him the kind of person everyone wanted to be around. He was known as the social connector by his closest friends, and his memory lives on through the DP Foundation.

Get Involved

The match will feature numerous promotions centered around raising awareness for sudden cardiac arrest. Fans will be able to learn how to administer CPR and use an AED prior to kickoff, at halftime, and after the game. There will also be special giveaways and more information on how to recognize a sudden cardiac arrest and the steps you should take to increase the odds of survival.

Pregame Autographs

Be there early! Jordan Morris and Husky alum Cristian Roldan, two stars of the Seattle Sounders, will be in attendance to show their support and sign autographs before the game.

DP Foundation

The DP Foundation is focused on saving and supporting young lives.

They save young lives by donating money to the Nick of Time Foundation to help them screen young hearts at local schools and teach kids CPR and how to use an AED. Additionally, they place AEDs throughout the community and run an annual charity golf tournament called the DP Open to raise funds and build awareness for sudden cardiac arrest.

The DP Foundation supports young lives through their Soccership program where they donate money to six local soccer clubs to help make soccer more affordable for local families. The funds are used for things like equipment, registration fees, and travel fees.

When do I cancel practice due to poor air quality?

SYSA would like to communicate our Air Quality advisory and tools we use to evaluate it and how we determine when practices will proceed or be cancelled.

If you are a coach or parent looking to make a decision related to air quality and the safety of playing soccer outdoors, we hope to best inform all clubs and families one and a half (1.5) hours before the start of practices and games to allow families time to change schedules. However, please note that in some cases the cancellations decisions could be made in under the time specified above as air quality can change rapidly.

If the average AQI for Seattle and its field locations reaches 150 (or higher) then practices should be cancelled for the safety and welfare of our players and coaches.

No teams should practice outdoors or participate in games when this threshold level is reached. We use air quality monitoring websites and base decisions on the data provided.

Parents are encouraged to use their own best judgement when deciding what is best for the health of their players. If a player has Asthma or other respiratory such conditions an AQI of 100 and above is deemed unhealthy for those sensitive groups.

For the current real-time AQI forecast, click on this link https://www.airnow.gov
